As a middle aged European (married) woman, the only men who have ever asked me out recently were foreigners, mostly European, Middle Eastern and Latino. They just asked and weren't paralyzed by Doing The Right Thing, or being rejected, or finding out I was in fact married. No hard feelings. One of them just continued talking to me for an hour afterward. So easy and relaxed.
American men, born and bred in the US, seem to be very afraid of offending. It must make it so much harder to find people!
