The issue in this thread is that people are assuming HS works like ES. It doesn’t. A principal has tons of discretion to reclassify in ES. Once they’ve started HS, there’s virtually no discretion precisely because they don’t want kids gaming the system to redo bad grades.

No, they don’t. Depending on how their private has listed the classes, and assuming she passed them & took normal math and English classes & at least 2 other classes, she is a sophomore in DCPS.

In DCPS, if you’ve passed Algebra I and freshman English and have at least 6 credits (including language and math from middle school, if applicable), you’re a sophomore. There are a lot of kids who repeat 9th, but they repeat because they outright fail their classes, not because they have Cs and want a do-over for college apps.

Has she ever attended a public school in DC? I would immediately pull her out of private school so she doesn't finish 9th grade. Then say she was homeschooled for 8th and you don't have school records.

She did attend public middle. She's 15 with Dec bday.

Then it wouldn't work. Midway through junior year she will be 18. She could be driving her freshman year. And if she is already in the system then they will know she should be going into 10th grade. I

It wouldn't work for who? It happens all the time. 20% of my kid's class are reclass kids and will graduate when 19.

It doesn't sound like anyone knows the actual rule.

So has she only been at her private school for this year? I don't think DCPS is going to allow you to drop her back a year. Also, for schools that ask for 9th grade grades, you will have to produce this year's transcript as well and, depending on how your school coded things, DCPS will not allow her to repeat some classes. I think this is not a great plan, overall, especially as she's actually on the old side for her year.

Some colleges don’t even look at 9th grade grades. Notably the UCs.

Especially if her private was rigorous, even if she had trouble she could end up being bored repeating the entire year. Bored high schoolers get into trouble. High school schedules are often flexible enough that if she needs to repeat certain classes she can.

I agree with this. It's unlikely that she will want to still be living with you at 19. I know you're likely not want her 9th grade marks to be considered in college admission, but it's a really big decision to hold her back entirely.

Don't do this...you are required to register as a homeschooling family in DC and schools can verify with OSSE, if needed.

Thinking of transferring my current 9th grader DD from her private that is too far of a commute for us now to our IB high school. I would like for her to do 9th grade again. She was recently diagnosed with a LD and I think starting fresh would be the best option for her. Is this possible?
