Assuming nearly equal numbers of men and women, there are significant numbers of men having emotional affairs and significant numbers of women having physical affairs. Those people having affairs need partners of the opposite sex in most cases.

Bingo. It’s like the myth that on average, women have fewer sexual partners than men.
That’s not how math works.
It might be a myth, but not because of math. One woman could be having sex with hundreds of men or vice versa.

I’ve seen way too married women regularly flirt with their male co-workers, friends, doctors, passersby, etc.,
But a man will usually only have a a singular women or two on the side when he decides to be unfaithful.
Now, I do think sleeping with someone is significantly worse than an emotional affair, but it is still cheating.
