Yes some do this. Usually with a private or college class of the same level, a prep class for the particular subject or a tutor.

I believe MC offers math and even advance science prep classes with Yang Academy.

This sounds like a terrible idea. Either the child will master the material over the summer and be bored retaking the class over the school year or they won’t master the material, which will make things so much worse. By the time they see it again, it will be thoroughly muddled and the only thing they’ll be certain of is that the material is confusing. They’ll have to overcome their mathematical misconceptions at the same time they are having to overcome their frustration and feelings of inadequacy.

If your child has trouble with math, spend the summer shoring up any weak spots, so they have a rock solid mathematical foundation and the confidence that they’re prepared for the upcoming year.

Additionally/alternatively, you might consider hiring a tutor for the next school year who can make sure your child masters each concept as it’s introduced, occasionally reviewing to keep the material fresh, and pointing out the connections between new material and what they already know.

I know people usually take it after they don't do well but why not take it before so the school year is easier?

I don't think you can do that. Grades from summer school go on transcript, and that is it.

It’s this. If you take the class over the summer, you cannot then take it during the school year. Classes can’t be repeated unless you fail (or it’s something like band that always repeats).

Then how can you retake a class in summer school to improve your grade? Are you saying it just doesn’t work in reverse?

You can do them privately - Sidwell, Landon, etc but not through MCPS.

Classes may be repeated to improve the grade, even if it’s not a failing grade.

Do you mean a college level course?

It’s not exactly a secret that some kids do their math class over the summer with a tutor so the material isn’t new during the school year
