Not OP, but yes, they will come up on my front porch and eat the flowers in planters. We have to protect everything. Squirrels are actually less destructive than the local deer.

I think the she just doesn't want to put forks in the container, and the cost excuse is because she doesn't want to tell OP she's not taking her suggestion because she just doesn't like it for some other unknown reason.

OP here. Yes! They find it uncomfortable and won’t climb in to dig and bury their treasures.

For whatever reason, she doesn't like that solution. She's using the cost as an excuse to not pursue it.

It isn’t really, though. They are clear in color and you don’t even see them. They are placed IN the pot, below the rim of the pot, and the foliage surrounds them. They just make it undesirable for squirrels to climb in.

Yeah she just doesn't like that method and is using cost as an excuse. But she probably just thinks it's tacky and doesn't want to say that to you.

I can’t decide if it’s cheapness or stubbornness.

My sister was telling me how she spent a small fortune on two porch plant/flower arrangements. She was complaining that squirrels keep climbing into the planter to dig, but in the process, they are breaking the flowers. She asked if I had a solution, and I did! I told her that the upside down fork method worked immediately when squirrels were digging in my fall mums. She balked, “won’t that cost money?” I’m like, maybe $3 tops, $1.25 at Dollar Tree? I told her I had tried all the “free” deterrents first (chili powder, chili flakes, etc) and none of it worked at all. She shrugged and said she would try something else first, before spending more money. Meanwhile, the squirrels are slowly destroying this flower arrangement that cost MUCH more than $3.
