When they are young (pre-school) start with the "friendly" classic rock that has a lot of harmony: Beach Boys, Crosby Stills Nash, the Beatles.

Then slowly introduce things they find interesting. The beatles are great bc you can bridge to "harder" guitar driven rock but its still friendly bc is the beatles.

And then see where it takes them. If they prefer strong vocals, well, that's easy and you can bring them from Elton to Billy Joel all the way up through modern vocalists.

If they like the pounding drums and guitars, I found that that Led Zep and Nirvana are actually pretty accessible to elementary aged kids

And then, if they really love it, get them some used equipment off marketplace and let them make as much noise as they want in the basement.

It's loud, but its totally worth it

I grew up with classical music playing in the background all the time. My parents listened to Met opera on Saturdays. All my siblings and I play a musical instrument. You create the music background in your own home.

How old is your child? Recs will be different for toddler or elementary school!

At an appropriate age, go see live music. The Kennedy center millennium stage has free concerts 365 days a year.

Sing with your child. All the time. Play music in the car and sing along. Dance and sing. Sing and dance. Then find a toddler music class like Music Together. Then start an instrument with the Suzuki method at age 4.

This is what we did and our child just completed her recital playing the equivalent of a Julliard audition. She is not going to conservatory because she plans to be a lawyer. She has a 4.0 at a magnet school and is attending a top SLAC in the fall. She loves music.

You don’t need camps and clubs you need to play music every day and sing and drum and play with sound.
