Try a large Rubbermaid type container with several inches of litter inside. The sides should be high enough to keep the urine inside and the cat should still be able to jump in and out unless she is injured or arthritic.

We had this problem too. I got a box with a higher back edge than front and she cannot raise her backside above the edge of it, so everything stays in. Here's a link:

If your box is against a wall, you can put another half a pad under the box and tape the other half against the wall. Painter’s tape works great. Easily changeable.

Look up cat litter box pee shields and then call around or look for similar semi-rigid pieces of plastic.

OP again. Ideally a solution that could be purchased locally would be best, as I have a catsitter coming later this week and Amazon delivery times have been unreliable. I didn't find anything at Petsmart that would seem to solve this dilemma though.

We tried a covered litter box, but our cat won't use it. We have an extra large litter box where the front is low, the sides gradually slope up, and the back is high. If she's peeing in the front corners, it's fine, no problem. When she occasionally chooses to pee in the back corners or, more recently, along one side of the litter box, she starts to raise her rear end while she's peeing, and about half of it sprays outside the box. So it seems to be the higher sides in those locations that are prompting her to do that. We taped a plastic bag to the wall behind the litter box, and let it hang down into the box to try and contain the spray, but it's not sufficient, and a lot is getting around it. Any suggestions?
