Working with remote interns is a huge PITA, so I get it.

I have also suspected that remote work has greatly cut down on the number of internships. My company cut our internship for budget reasons last year and while finances are better there doesn't seem to be a lot of interest in restoring it in what is now a mostly remote workplace. So much of what interns get out of internships is the in-office experience and it can be really hard to onboard and train a remote intern so I can definitely see more companies deciding it's not worth the effort. We used to hire 100 interns in the summer across all business functions plus 30-50 each in Fall and Spring.

DS (rising senior) does have an internship for the summer but applied to a ton of places and had a strong resume with on-campus experience. He says most of his friends don't have internships this summer, just standard teen summer jobs. One friend who does have a good business internship was very involved in his major's honor society and heard about the internship through that. It's really competitive out there and you need to be building your resume during the school year.
