You can place diatomaceous earth in car and vacuum it up after 24 hours. If it is food grade it should be safe if someone comes in contact with it even after vacuuming. However, you should avoid inhaling it.
The carpet beetles come in contact with and it kills them.

Any recommendations on how to handle? This is a 15 year old car, if that matters.
If you don’t have pets, you could spray a bunch of permethrin on some rags and leave them on the floor mats to “permeate” inside the car for a few days. That will kill any insect in the car stone dead. But it’s toxic to pets, especially cats.

About every 4 months I find a bug which looks like a carpet beetle (or distressingly maybe a bed bug? I’ve never seen one in person). Usually in trunk randomly, today one was crawling along head liner.
Mechanic never says they see bugs or anything, deep cleaning the car I haven’t found anything, are these living in my car or just showing up as hitchhikers? I guess I can call a pest company, but do they work on cars?
