Every year, we used to say we were thinking of returning to public to get a new IEP. Then it would be converted to a service plan in MCPS after we stayed. We sincerely were contemplating returning and that way it was always current. We did switch for high school and it was helpful to have the previous year's draft in the system.

They can offer you very minimal services at your home school (like speech once a week if you qualify etc) but you can refuse those services and still keep the service plan active. Please make sure you don’t let the IEP process lapse or close bc it’s such a pain to restart all over again. We had Ed consultants come to our meetings as well to help guide the discussion etc.

This 100%. You can also do 1) evaluations once every 3 years through the public school and 2) get some (very limited) money for services through the parochial school department.

The previous PP is giving totally false info about closing IEP.

Nothing happened when we left but this was FCPS. We unenrolled in public, enrolled in private. No meeting of any kind. We did not pursue services at the new school since very limited were offered through 504 plans. I figure if my kid ever goes back to public there will be a bunch of meetings and maybe eligibility again.

We haven't maintained the IEP for super long, but the few years we have done it have been easy. If you really think they will never go back to public, it may not be worth it, but if there's any chance of it, I think it's worth keeping. I don't know, but it's possible having it could help with college accomodations.

If you’re not accepting the offered services (b/c you are in private) then the IEP is closed. You can ask to be re-evaluated if you return to public later but you have to start the process over as if your kid is being considered for the first time. However, one of your supporting documents can be the previous IEP.

There is no pause or hold for an IEP.

NP here. Do you know what the re-evaluation process looks like and how long that takes?

Re-evaluation after and IEP is closed follows the same process and timeline as if the child never had an IEP. You’re starting from the beginning. The old IEP can be used as supporting documentation in the same way that a neuropsych is used as supporting documentation.

DD has an IEP from MoCo but has been in private school recently and may stay thru middle and high school but we don’t know yet. Any advice on what to do, not do, include when the IEP is up for renewal?
