Agreed.....they all almost always change their mind!!! IF they got into both (and that's a big IF).....I'd just go with the better school so when they change their covered, if they don't, they are still set up well to apply to vet school, med school, grad schools, whatever.

First go to UC Davis is you can get in or Cornell. VT isn't even top 30 for vet schools.

You should go to UVA because 80 percent of all students change their major. It's s better choice for that and a better launching pad for grad schools.

Take a shot at Clemson. They are opening a brand new vet school in 2026 on campus and they love OOS students!

You have good options beyond UVA and VT and you don't have to do "pre-vet" to become a vet.

Since in state apply to both. If DS gets into one or both, then you can start weighing pros/cons.

My DD also wanted to be a vet at that age, she's a rising senior in college with an anthropology major. I don't really understand why people focus so much on what a kid who is in 10th grade wants to do for a living, to the point of choosing a particular school. Go to the best school they can get into that they will enjoy and it will all work out.

Apply to both and plenty of other schools. Then see how things work out. While both UVA and VT are great options, they aren't a sure thing when it comes to admissions.

Also remember that your kid may change their mind about what they want to study and their goals. It seems like most do.

Thank you! That's what my thinking is as well....you'd be super lucky to go to either and both would prepare you well if that's what you end up wanting to do. Just want to make sure I'm giving the right advice!

Good friends daughter went to UVA for Biology and is now in Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Tech. Don't think you can do wrong at either school.
