Subject: Imagine Summer Learning-Middle School level
Here was my child's day at elementary ESY:
Drove her, showed at 8:45. All the kids in the cafeteria. Lots of confusion. Teacher shows up around 9:25, takes the kids to their classroom. Then they went to get breakfast. Breakfast takes up until around 10. Then they read independently for some time. There were picture books in the classroom but none at the correct level for my child (no chapter books). This was 3rd grade rising 4th grade BTW. Then, they went to recess, came back in. Then there was one math video ("Mr Math" put on the screen) and then everyone had the same worksheet even though it was a mixed grade group (I believe 3rd thru 5th?. Then, a snack. I left with her in disgust after that--the day was almost over but I assume lunch was happening and then dismissal-- and did not return. The day seemed design to burn time and require as little actual teaching as possible.

The name is hysterical. It’s like: Just imagine what learning could be. You won’t be doing it. But, just imagine if FCPS could pull it off. Imagine.

The teachers are low quality SPED teachers usually who just want quick summer money. They are not super skilled at teaching. +1. I would expect lots of Lexia and ST Math, and poorly-behaved kids.
Yeah I wouldn't put my kids through this.

Anyone teach or have their child participate in this? The hours aren't great (7 am-11 am) and the location is far away but if it's a really great learning experience it might be worth the hassle.
OTOH, if its just middle school kids sitting on laptops clicking mindlessly on lexia and st math, then its a pass obviously.
One of my dc had a really bad ESY experience where they sat in an empty classroom on laptops all morning so I am a litle suspicious of FCPS summer learning.
