There is a lot of drama on some college subs. Don't assume the experience of the kids posting is normal.

ApplyingtoCollege is Ivy obsessed. I'm surprised there's a separate ApplyingIvy.

Like any other forum, take the information with a grain of salt. Reddit can be useful for anecdotes. However, much of the advice comes from other students, many of whom don't know anything. Understand who is saying what.

There are a few adults posting there. Pay more attention to those posts if you are looking for information. And always try to verify elsewhere.

I mean - sometimes Reddit is fun. Like for celebrity gossip or home decorating or discussing your favorite TV show. But I promise you do not want to get involved with r/ApplyingToCollege or - god forbid - let your child get involved. It will only stress you out more.

I've been checking out the subs for some of the colleges that my kid will apply to later this year. It's a little disconcerting and a little interesting.

If you find Reddit toxic, that’s a reflection of what you’ve curated. Reddit relies on moderators to keep discussions civil. Many subs do a great job of this. If you’re following AITA, askreddit, or amiugly, or anything political, then sure. But groups focused on things like cooking, gardening, science, nature, or your favorite show, well, this discussions can be very civil and in the case of medical diagnoses, very supportive.

Reddit atc is very toxic.

I find the subreddits on certain professions are helpful. Keep in mind there are many people complaining on Reddit, but it’s some good info about careers.

I agree as well. The subreddits I follow (including A2C) are helpful and supportive.

I don’t find it useful at all. It’s mostly a space for high achieving teens to vent and stress to each other.

Reddit has useful info sometimes, but not always. What is a constant is its hostile, contrarian, and humorless userbase. And Reddit’s karma system encourages even the most innocuous of threads to devolve and veer off topic. When you combine these two things, you’re left with a consistently unpleasant experience, whether you are commenting or just viewing.

Reddit is worse than DCUM because even when threads veer completely off-topic, some users will still attempt an honest discussion. There isn’t an incentive for them to argue like with Reddit’s karma points.
