Thanks. I hate to say this, but my inclination is to go to Sibley, the "best" hospital in DC and work it out from there. Sadly all hospitals are not equal and I would want my loved one (having BTDT but not in DC) to be in a setting where there would be optimal visitation if DC wanted us there and where we would be able to figure out the next move.

If it's a life and death situation, go to the ER and take a piw slot or wherever you can get a bed. Or Cpep by stadium armory.

My adult son when to the ER at Shady Grove Adventist. They kept him for ten days, and then transitioned to a good outpatient schedule. All covered by my insurance (Cinga).

Go directly to Shepard Pratt in Baltimore.

Some of you shouldn't comment if you don't know what you're talking about. If they have to be transported by police/ambulance, then by all means do closest ER. But if they're able to stay safe for a car ride, go only to a hospital that ALREADY HAS a psych unit. SP is one of the best locally.

Go to a suburban ER (VA or MD).

My husband has done two weeks (two occasions) at Sibley and it's good as these things go. I heard it called "the Ritz Carlton of psych wards" by a patient once.

ER. They will transfer to a psych facility.

Long term really doesn't exist. At best the person might get 21-30 days to stabilize.

IDK the DC psych ER units, but if me, I would opt for the "best" hospital. I've been in a county with only one hospital and only one psych ER unit and it can be grueling to have your loved one in there, especially if they are young.

There generally isn't insurance coverage for an "inpatient long stay," so that would typically be covered out of pocket. And that's assuming you can find a spot open, which is less likely than not.

I hope this all comes together easily, but I think you and your friend need to be ready not to be able to exert nearly this much control over what happens. It's often a mad scramble praying you can get something that is much less than what you need -- but if it's private pay out of pocket (without insurance), there are more options.

Hi , what hospital do you recommend within DC for a friends adult daughter who is going through a mental health crisis. At this point thinking of a hospital that may provide inpatient long stay . Thanks for any support.
