I respond on DCUM to practice my writing ability. I don't think I am a very good writer -- I would describe myself as earnest but ungraceful. People often misinterpret my posts. Sometimes I think it is their fault but often it is mine.

If I need a question answered it's sometimes helpful or if I can help someone else by posting answer I think I get a dopamine boost lol. But when just talking about random subjects I want to feel some connection as I live pretty isolated these days.

I’m often too afraid to post because I’ve asked legitimate questions and gotten such mean responses, and I’m overly sensitive. I’ve gotten some good advice, though, too. I try to respond if I think it’ll help a person.

I love DCUM. As a socially anxious introvert, it's perfect for me to talk to people. Also, we can discuss various sensitive topics in an unfiltered way, something I would have a hard time doing face-to-face with someone, except a couple of really close friends and relatives. This enriches the input for sensitive-topic discussion and broadens my mind. I never get hung up on some posters' rudeness, or anything negative. I am interested in why people think what they think.

When I have a question but don’t know anybody IRL who can answer it.

When I have a question but it relates to an aspect of my life I want to keep private (kids struggle).

Entertainment when I’m killing time. Some of the posts are juicy or funny.

To offer support to others who may be going through a tough time.

What are your major motivations for replying on dcum posts? I get why folks ask questions, but why do you respond? I'm on here most days, but when on top of my game, I'm actually not. I think for me it's a combination of wanting to feel connected somehow, wanting validation by someone else liking my comment, or wanting to buck someone up. Sometimes when I'm in a bad mood, I am snarky. I also like the idea that while we likely don't agree politically, we can help each find casual summer dresses.
