Thank you, this is good to know as an option. We are hoping to do the in person therapy with Dr. Terlep as I think our insurance covers it and DD would do better with another human directing her who is not parent. Dr. Terlep says therapy will/can help with reading comprehension too which would be amazing.

Test away. You can’t have too many accommodations.

For reading comp, we use a tutor. No improvement per say but helps them and us understand whats going.

I an adult with a late diagnosis of ADHD and did not go through testing but expect that I have always had an auditory processing problem- especially with numbers - getting them in the right order. I have found listening to books for pleasure has helped me immensely in improving my auditory processing. Used to have to constantly rewind when I first started, but my listening comprehension has improved greatly with continued experience.

We used Dr. Terlep with Potomac Audiology for DC with ADHD, dyslexia, and dyscalculia. Our insurance did cover the diagnosis and treatment.

If just to rule it out, I would get it done. There are effective treatments available depending on the specific deficit. Fortunately for my son, his area of disorder was treatable. I worked with him over one summer, and the change was remarkable. We had his initial testing done at Gaullaudet, which was covered by insurance. While the test seemed very thorough it took the longest time and many calls before we received the results. We had our follow-up testing done by Dr. Jay Lucker and paid out-of-pocket:

I have this and was diagnosed as an adult. It sucks but I wouldn’t waste time and money on therapies and interventions. You mostly have to figure out how to work with it and around it bc that’s your brain.

Yes, it was worth it to get the auditory processing disorder diagnosed. There are interventions that can help, but the assessment and diagnosis needed to be given first. We got a referral from our speech therapist for Dr. Jim Lucker, an expert in APD. We paid out of pocket for his services. Good luck

If my teen has already been diagnosed with ADHD/ASD, is it worth getting an evaluation for auditory processing disorder? I see some places that say they don’t test if you already have a diagnosis for ASD because many of the manifestations overlap. But it seems there may be slightly different accommodations or therapeutic interventions for auditory processing disorders so I wonder if it is worth testing.

Relatedly, anyone have ideas where they will test and take insurance?
