The studies theorize that since the body tasted something sweet but didn't get the calories to go along with it, it makes you crave actual calories.

I cut out Diet Coke years ago and drink Perrier now. Still expensive but I want those bubbles. I can't say I'm less hungry but I definitely feel better.

Having said that, nothing in moderation should hurt. I had been drinking several a day.

I don’t think an occasional Diet Coke will completely hamper your weight loss goals. I dropped my almost daily Diet or Zero sugar soda habit at the beginning of the year. I’d have one a day as an afternoon pick me up.

I’m trying to lose weight and felt like the artificially sweet taste made me crave and eat other sweets. I think dropping the habit has helped curb the afternoon sweet tooth. I wish I could say substantial weight loss followed, but it’s been minimal (6 lbs since mid Jan) despite other changes made.

It seems unlikely that the occasional Diet Coke will impede your weight loss. However, if you've already done everything you can to modify your diet and can't hit your goal weight, then try cutting out Diet Coke to see what happens.

Wrong. It tasts awful. You drink it because you are addicted.

Coke tastes good. It's also addictive. Lots of foods are like this. Most people are not eating a 100% clean, healthy diet, so pick your poison. I'd rather have Coke than potato chips or cake.

I think it keeps your sweet tooth up and doesn’t curb cravings for sweetness like cutting it out would.

If you’re really trying to lose weight, I’d try giving it up for a month and see how it goes.

Sorry OP, the anti-soda brigade has arrived. FWIW, I have recently lost 15 pounds by cutting out sugar and keeping my one per day Diet Coke habit.

Cookies and ice cream also have their own aisle. Clearly people are making room in their diet for some treats. Some people take it to far sure...but most people have some occasional unhealthy choices.

If I have the occasional diet coke will that work against my weigh loss goals?

No. It won't. Occasional is the key. I drink maybe one or tow a week and it has absolutely no impact on my weight (I'm not trying to lose but maintain).

The weight gain studies were all correlation, not causation. Heavier people are more likely to drink diet sodas. The diet sodas didn’t cause the weight gain.

Diet soda is fine in moderation (like what you describe) ESPECIALLY if it’s going to keep you from reaching for something caloric instead.
