We bought our college kids laptops the summer before freshman year. Our oldest was issued an iPad for their program junior year with all of the required software loaded.

Comp Sci student - uses both with iPad mostly for note taking. Has them set up as dual screen.

False. Ipads are great for taking notes, doing problem sets, creating study guides for exams. Our student uses one in addition to his laptop.

My art major sister does a ton of digital sketching and design work on her iPad with a stylus. She doesn't have a MacBook or laptop.

Junior daughter - engineering major. Use both Mac Air and ipad. Used ipad in high school. Likes it to keep her calendar and take notes. Several of her friends got ipads in college after seeing how she uses her ipad. If your student does not currently use an ipad and notability or other such aps. A computer may be fine. We were also told that Macs are not as good as PCs for certain engineering software but have not run into a problem. It is an older Mac and were told not to get one with the new chip or processor (not really sure - just bought what they said to buy).

DC a frosh at Stanford got an iPad in the middle of first quarter. It helped a lot for Chem and Math since it was more convenient for note taking and submitting psets. We originally sent him off to college with a desktop and laptop, but he asked for the ipad afterwards.

My VT kid uses an IPad and non Apple laptop.

No, his life is on his Macbook. My younger teen loves her iPad, she uses it for her digital art hobby.

Yes. They both use an iPad with the stylus. They both asked for one after the first semester. It’s great for taking notes. Freshman and Junior in different majors and schools.

Got my kid a MacBook (or whatever the laptop is called) and an iPad 3 years ago when she started college. Never uses the iPad. YMMV.

I know we need to get our kid a laptop, but would an iPad also be helpful? Do kids take laptops to class or would the iPad be better for that?
