My kids had rising 9th grade friends who missed the opportunity to be on a fall sport team because their parents had planned camps or vacations for the second half of August, and they missed tryouts. (It may not seem like a big deal now, but making friends and getting to know the campus during the couple of weeks before starting high school does a lot to mitigate anxiety about moving into such a big and overwhelming school environment.)
In terms of pools, there are almost certainly waitlists for the pools that tend to have students from your schools (Daleview, Franklin Knolls, Northwest Branch). Good luck!

Thanks. So 9th grade tryouts are August before 9th grade?

Yes - major fall sports are soccer, cross country, football, field hockey (girls). Soccer is insanely competitive, cross country is no cuts.

Then the older one to Blair or some other DCC option next year. The 8th grader is in AAU basketball with kids mostly from Maryland. But yeah, 8th grade is going to be a rough transition, but we are playing the long game.

Pine Crest will be fine, but Eastern is going to be the tough one. Both schools have magnet programs, and the Eastern one tends to be pretty clique-ish, if only because they don’t have a ton of classes with non-magnet kids. The magnet classes naturally have more interaction built in than the non-magnet ones generally do, so the magnet kids get to know each other pretty well by 8th.

I’d highly suggest some school clubs and activities to try to break into established groups—theater would be a good one, if they’re into that, or there’s a pretty solid math team.

The cafeteria has always been a mess, loud and overcrowded, but they generally don’t mind if kids find a classroom with a teacher present to eat in. The halls can get chaotic, too, but my kid quickly figured out which routes avoided crowds and potential problems. The library was their oasis.

This is all solid advice. I'd also get on the wait list at Franklin Knolls Pool, even if you only get an August membership this summer.

For the fourth grader, I'd recommend signing up for Takoma Soccer next fall and asking to be put on a team with other Pine Crest kids (my child's team practices/plays at Pine Crest so there should be plenty of kids from that school on one of the teams).

Both DCC and "criteria based" magnet forms will be due pretty early in the 24/25 school year, so be on the lookout for those and come back if you have questions about those processes!

Yikes 8th seems like a rough time to transition. Are they involved in a sport?

This is super neighborhood specific but it is a good question. Overall. Specific neighborhoods are going to have pools that a lot of folks go to, even if they aren't fancy enough to have their own neighborhood pool. There are also recreational sports teams that tons of kids play in certain neighborhoods, which might be relevant for your younger one, and some community center summer camps that would be good.

Where are you moving?

Which school OP? We can provide you with school-specific suggestions.

Agree with the pool suggestion.

If your new neighborhood has a pool...that can be a good way to meet people before school starts.

Also, if you need aftercare for your 4th grader, the time to try to get a spot is yesterday. Do it now. Otherwise, agree with PP.

Welcome to MoCo! I would suggest joining the PTA/PTSA at each school. You may even be able to get on their listservs now, to start getting a sense of what's happening at each school.
