Op here. I love his show, still. My beef with him is he does these vanity projects that aren’t nearly as amusing as he thinks they are (fine), and the accompanying media blitz—sooo tacky. We get it, you used your connections to literally appear everywhere to pump up “Unfrosted” (which, if he wasn’t Jerry Seinfeld, would never get made). He’s been doing this since “Bee Movie.”

And maybe those in the profession admire his stand-up chops and work ethic, but he’s nowhere near the greatest standup of his generation. He’s amusing and occasionally insightful, but not particularly innovative or even hilarious.

Someone here on DCUM has a real problem with Seinfeld.

If the TV show hadn’t happened, Seinfeld would be the most popular standup of a now-older generation. People who like standup would know him, and he’d play Vegas a lot.

Larry David would’ve written for and maybe produced a bunch of funny shows, if he managed to avoid alienating too many people.

Here's my take - I think comedians are kind of old school in that they have this hierarchy of "kings of comedy" who forged the path ahead of them. They all bowed to Carson, Letterman, etc

Jerry is the king for younger stand-ups, almost all of whom work for the late-night shows. His TV show paved the way for other comedians to be successful in Hollywood.

Jerry is more of a stand-up guy and so has more "street cred." Whereas Larry David was never great at stand-up but is a great writer and collaborator.

In short: Jerry played the same comedy clubs as others and quickly demonstrated a commitment to the craft that others noticed and admired. Comics respect him. His show is almost secondary to reputation he built as a comedian. And his approach to comedy and the craft of refining topics absolutely was showcased on his show.

He’s always been a cranky old man, and now that he’s 70 he’s really comfortable with it.

I enjoyed hearing that he reads Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations. Very solid outlook on life.

And he adores his wife.
