The options before the ACA were less expensive plans where the insurance company was happy to collect your money until you got sick, then they kicked you off the policy or jacked up your premiums sky high. It was the illusion of health coverage. Then, once you had a pre-existing condition, the next insurer would not cover it.
The ACA isn’t perfect but it’s better than what came before. Sounds like OP is prioritizing travel over health coverage, which is fine — and probably means they are pretty healthy. Luckily for them, if they do get seriously sick, they will still be able to buy an ACA plan, because ACA plans have to cover preexisting conditions.
