UVa Engineering School is fairly small. Long ago, it was maybe 2000-2200 undergrads, now probably closer to 3000 (still small). You can look up the actual number. Engineering has its own undergrad admissions pool, which is separate from A&S, Architecture, Data Science and Nursing. Partly because of its small size, UVa SEAS admissions always has been competitive.

VT has a MUCH larger E School, purely as a size contrast.

If the go SLHS, they should go full IB. I think almost every one of the kids admitted are full IB.

It will be much easier to get in to UVa if DC is in the top 10% of graduating class at South Lakes than if DC is in the bottom 70% at TJ. TJ is another level of competitive, much more so than South Lakes HS.

UVa will not fill its entire class from one region or from one HS. Acceptances are spread around the state - and around each region - geographically. If they did otherwise, they know they would be in political trouble with the VA state legislature.

That said, right now most college admissions are somewhat like a lottery (including to UVa). So understand that no guarantees either way and have several backup plans.

OP, it will be easier to get in from his base (if he does well there). You don’t go to TJ for college admissions. It is mich harder to get in from there. You go for the education. My 4.3, 1580 kid was rejected from UVA from TJ but he loved TJ and is very happy where he ended up.

UVA is weak in STEM.

It will be different starting next year. The DEI elite need to prove that this social experiment worked, so TJ will have admissions results that are better than it's ever been before, starting next year.

In the past, TJ saw the highest number of admissions to UVA among Virginia high schools, particularly when it held the top ranking. Presently, although it has slipped to 14th place, TJ still outperforms other high schools in Virginia significantly.

Admissions typically require a GPA of at least 4.4, with a slight adjustment to 4.5 for Southlakes. Achieving a 4.5 GPA may be easier outside of TJ.

TJ offers abundant opportunities, but they are largely accessible to only the top 10% of students. This can be disheartening for those outside that bracket.

Sad to say, but—from an admissions standpoint—I suspect he’d be better off at South Lakes.

We are zoned for South lakes high, but DS got admitted to TJ and he accepted.

His dream is to go to UVA for computer engineering. Heard from some friends today that it might be easier to get admitted to UVA from South lakes than TJ because of the competition at TJ.

Is this true? Is he going to be better off at South lakes for UVA or Virginia Tech for computer engineering? Thanks!
