Totally facility specific. My parents were in 2 different places, each allowed dogs. Might be a limit re: size/breed/number of dogs total allowed in the facility. I would guess that the renting arrangement, pets might be welcome more often since the facility could decide the resident is not a good fit, and kick them out. I'm guessing buy-in places have to have stricter rules/enforcement from the very beginning.

In the case for my parents, and they were not the ones who owned the dog, the dogs were no problem. No barking problems reported. The resident might walk them through the common area but the dogs were not present, generally, inside in the common areas. You really wouldn't know they had a dog in their apartment - I think that's how management would like it.

My mom’s independent living place and her assisted living place allowed pets. Some places you can pay extra for someone else to come and feed, clean up after and walk the pets and some places people hire out.

We did a lot of research on AL places and they mostly seemed to allow pets, as long as the owner was capable of taking care of their needs.

Well, right not in NOVA but I guess I was sort of just wondering the trend or requirements, generally. I get that it would prob be "no" in the more hospital type setting where care is high and they are nearing end of life. But was thinking in the settings up to that point. . . .

New York State requires IL facilities to allow residents to have pets.

Once you need AL, certain things should be off-limits, such as pets and driving

I feel like this would be the biggest trauma for some elderly (certainly myself) not being able to have a pet in my final days.
