I gained 20lbs when I took prednisone for chronic hives and it did not come off when I stopped taking it.

It's not inevitable but it takes a lot of planning to avoid. Prednisone absolutely does drive hunger--a kind I had never before experienced in my life. For that I did lots of high-volume, low-calorie food intake and exercise.

It also does change patterns of body fat deposition.

I was on 40 mg/day, tapering, for nine months. I did get a puffy face, but that went away after about 2 weeks off the prednisone.

Are you eating more or do the meds mess up your metabolism? What dose do you take? Has it helped with your pain? How long have you been on them?
