The MLS level team gets no help from the fees collected from the lower team, that's unfounded rumors. In fact, the club fees are much higher and there is much more travel required that financially shocks parents whose kid joins the first time. That's the costs parents need to be understand and play for.


This sounds like a coach post.

Are you telling us that each team within an academy are self sufficient? That makes no economic sense.

Of course the MLS level teams get help from fees collected from lower teams. Those lower level club fees help with scholarships for MLS players, team insurance, salaries for staff, field fees, etc.

At all age groups, people pay the club fees, which go into the fixed costs that the academy then has. Team fees are also collected, but these Team fees do not support scholarship players, or pay Technical Director salary (who also coaches), or fully support coaches salaries, and the other above costs mentioned. Another example is that, MLSN teams get the better fields and more field space. This all costs money and MLSN team fees for 10-15 non-scholarship MLSN players are not covering all these costs.

So without the support of people paying the full club fees amount on lower level teams like MLS2, blue, orange, and black, there are no scholarship players, there are not as many fields, there are not as many coaches making money, there is no Tech Director, etc.



Please share which non-Academy MLS clubs are giving out scholarships to the top top players. Not financial aid. TY


I know SYC, Alex, Beth give scholarships. No $ 3,000 club costs. GFR, Arlington and other clubs do this too for their top teams players.

MLSN was ~ $300 more. What do you get out of that? Nothing. The coach is still crappy and you still have to pay for your own travel. The team fee that is collected goes towards the tournament registration and coach's travel ( hotel, airfare, car rental and food allowance).

One thing I am curious about is the Club lead tournaments. For SYC, we have to pay to play in the in Virginian and it is a mandatory tournament that every team has to play in.

Its always been a pyramid scheme Americans fell into this trap long ago, because of consumerism and greed. As consumers/parents we can choose to hold them accountable but this is only valid if you have a player on your hands that is likely on scholarship, which at that point tends to silence the most passionate consumers

They might sell you a part time position which sounds great; you get to practice with the first team and then will be able to also play with them. But beware it is all a sales gimmick. Families were promised this and it never happened.

The new coach for the 2012 is great. The team will be fine. I think the roster is set for that team already.

Are these April tryouts actually for the MLS Next teams? or even MLS Next II? (U13-U19)
I thought those tryouts already happened a month ago, and OFFERS WERE SEND and teams were already formed.
Any ideas?
