Eroding beaches, wicked riptide, too many annoying people, bad dining. Nothing to do. Too long a drive. I get the appeal of huge houses and isolation but it's not for me anymore. I worked every summer in kitty hawk as a high schooler/college student, and for years after vacationed at duck or Hatteras ( depending on our mood). Just can't do it anymore.

It feels so....one foot in the grave now.

I feel like people from this area started going to the obx because it’s cheaper than the DE beaches and OC and Va beach are trashy.

Ugly Water, riptides, strip malls.

OBX: big house, big sandy beaches, big flags, and big trucks/SUVs. You’ll definitely come across MAGA/Trump flags, especially as you head north to Carova on the beach 4WD road.

That said, my in laws love OBX and we go every year so we can have 15 people in a house with a pool and one block walk to the beach. It’s hard to find that in the Northeast for under $20K/week.

You are referring to Maine. The most coveted beaches in NE are spectacular (Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, Block Island, Rhode Island)

Agreed. I grew up spending summers in Osterville on Cape Cod. The beaches were sandy (though would get some seaweed) and the water temperature was great for swimming. That part of the Cape has warm water because of the Gulf Stream and doesn’t get very big waves. I can’t speak to the OBX though.

It would be helpful to know what he didn’t like about the Delaware beaches. I am not a fan of the Outer Banks at all. I guess duck is OK, but the rest of the towns are strip mall after strip mall, severe undertow,l, just not my kind of place. We love the beaches in the Charleston area and also Wilmington area.

If he really likes a quiet beach, we used to stay in Kill Devil Hills and then drive down to the Hatteras National Seashore for beach time.

What is it that he doesn't think he'll like about OBX?

Does he hate crowds? (Obx beaches are quiet b/c there's very little public parking nearby (although Kitty Hawk has more entry points) so those folks/vrbo/airbnb renters walk orpark in the "residents only" area at the entry points...keeps out the riff Raf.

Is he misinformed- maybe he thinks it's just another rowdy beach (there is no loud boardwalk like at OC or VA Beach).

Does he think it's too boring (there are lots of historical sites - the WrightBrothers, lighthouses, museums)?

Does he think there's nothing to do besides lay on the beach (there's a bay side and an ocean side; water activities galore).

I went a little farther south to Wilmington and experienced the best sunset I'd ever seen.

I grew up in Boston and only went to NE beaches until I was an adult. I never went out beyond my ankles b/c it was so cold. The Outer Banks beaches are much warmer comparatively.

NC beaches are nice and smooth. New England beaches are rocky.

DH has absolutely no interest in Outer Banks and I have every curiosity about what people love about the beaches there.

We did all of Delaware beaches and he’s originally born and raised in Maryland. Grew up with Ocean City and didn’t love the Delaware coast. I think that’s why he enjoys the variety in NE.
