Some of those colleges may yield protect so for high stats kids, they could get flat out rejected.

Yes, they are at UMD for CS with merit. Another CS major friend of theirs who has an amazing application was also shut out and is with my DC at UMD, with merit.
Both kids went to magnet programs, 4.0 unwgpa and nearly 5.0 wgpa, SAT scores 1580+.

There are actually a lot of such kids at UMD, for CS at least.

They likely get rejected by all because it is a ton of work and supplementals to do that. Imagine each individual application kind of stinks.

Also, they clearly don’t care about any of the individual schools and what they offer, but rather just some measure of prestige.

Are you under the impression kids routinely apply to every single on of whichever schools happen to be in the top 20 in a given year?

You take a shot at a few of them maybe, but most kids will end up in the handful of target or schools they also apply to.

NP I was with up until "UMC white kid." There are way more white kids at T20 than any other race!

But, to the rest, absolutely. OP, stats are just part of the application, and the application is just part of the admissions process. Colleges want to get a sense of the candidate through other aspects of tge app, and they have priorities to build the class they want. Stats is only a starting point.

And agree with others that not getting into T20 doesn't equal "safety." Kids should have a range of target and likely schools in addition to reaches. No T20 is a target.

Some got into these schools off the WL last year: WashU; Emory; Michigan; NYU

Of course but then they go somewhere pretty good. T21-30 includes Georgetown, Emory, Michigan, etc. Not too shabby.

100%. I know a lot of kids like this. Nothing surprising at all about it. And btw, rejection from top 20 does not mean you “end up” at a safety. There are tons of targets/likelies for every kind of student, not just safeties. A balanced list is your friend.

Yes, of course, ALL THE TIME! Are you new here? There’s NEVER a guarantee of getting into a top 20, no matter how high the stats. And if the child is an UMC white kid from the suburbs who isn’t a recruited athlete, it’s more likely that they won’t get in.

Curious if your child with high stats got rejected from all selective schools and what are they going to do next year? Are they okay going to a safety?
