Absolutely braids are the best.

They don’t want their hair cut and we honor that request….

What about a Dutch braid or French braid? Something to keep it from getting tangled? Then put the braid(s) under a swim cap. They can unbraid it after swim. It's not a fashion choice, but helps a ton with tangles.

Clearly it's a boy with longish hair.

Kids can learn. Even the nylon kind could help them. I swam competitively for 10+ years and coached swimming for many summers in college and beyond. It’s interesting so many of you assume the child is a female when OP clearly said THEY.

Oh this could also help a lot! Thanks! It’s worth a shot n

Have you tried putting a swim cap on? It’s not easy. She needs to practice. A lot.

My DD doesn’t love braids most of the time either, but her hair is thick and HOT - by July she is happy to have it out of her way as much as possible.

Thanks! We’ve taken this approach for indoor swimming so we may just continue into the summer.

Let her wear it loose the first day. I bet she changes her mind about braids after brushing out the bird’s nest that will likely ensue.

No one is going to put conditioner in her hair for her.

Why is a haircut not a (sensible) option?

Why aren’t braids an option? That’s how I deal with my dd’s hair. With a lot of conditioner every wash.

For those who have curly kids, how do you handle daily summer swimming? Our child’s hair would really benefit from some leave in conditioner or curl cream to try to limit the damage and major knots. Wearing it up each day or in braids isn’t an option.

What has helped?

Kiddo is 5, turning 6 mid summer.
Haircut is not an option.
