I think it's all over the map. You should call your school's language department and get your child tested.

And ofc the ones who go straight to Spanish IV but I don't nkow of kids who go higher. I'm sure there are some, just not anyone we know about.

The only MS immersion kid I know that is in 9th grade this year went in to Spanish 5. My own kid who want in immersion was in Spanish 3 in 8th grade so I’d assume that Spanish 3 being standard for immersion 9th graders is not correct.

This is a considerable disconnect in MCPS language instruction. Despite the benefits of immersion, there is no immersion continuation into high school, and different HS admins have different approaches. Some demand all students start HS with 4th level whether coming from 3rd-level non-immersion and 3rd-level immersion -- not considering any further mastery of the language conferred by 9 years of immersive learning and twice the language-specific class time covering grammar, etc., during middle school.

There does not appear to be a uniform evaluation capability for placement, no rubric from central, and individual selection of, say, an AP in a particular grade may or may not be offered.

Yes, the MS immersion classes are not at all like high school classes. At our HS kids go into Spanish III usually.

What level language class do middle school language immersion students generally take in ninth grade? I'm not sure what level classes are taught completely in the target language. And there is a difference between a Senior in high school who might have three years of studying a language under their belt and a Freshman who has been been studying in the language since kindergarten. One is more mature (probably), and might have a solid grasp of grammar, but the other is likely more fluent and conversational.

I'm mostly wondering when they will take AP and then be able to move on to literature, etc.
