Yes, I would go. 4 hours is nothing and that's considering traffic.

You’re right! I don’t know what I was thinking.

Not even a road trip and not even 400 miles.

Sorry!! This isn't even worth debating.

A road trip would be more like driving to Florida or New Orleans or Chicago.

As others have pointed out it's not 400 miles, it's about 250. And 4 hours is nothing. Even taking the train would take longer than that by the time you get to the train station. I drove to NYC for a dinner event a couple of months ago. Stayed one night. I am driving to North NJ for a day/night later this week.

Be aware that NYC is putting in a $15 congestion toll for midtown starting in mid-June. And parking is expensive. Have you looked at the bus? Lots of direct busses from various points in the area.

Normal. Parents are in NYC, we go up fairly frequently. Have fun!

If you don't want to drive, look into the bus (Mega Bus, Tripper Bus, there are many from the DMV to NYC). My teens loved that (they were watching by movies on their phones - the buses all have wifi) and so did I because I didn't have to drive

Yes! 4 hrs is nothing. NYC is great for a short get away! I’ve learned to say yes to a lot more and it makes a huge difference in mental health and living in the moment.

Agree. If this will make you miserable just send your DH and kids.

For me 4 hours is about the point I like to get a hotel for the night, but would wake up early and get back late if there was something I wanted to do/see in the city.

Very typical. Can also look at Amtrak which is what we do because we hate driving around Manhattan and paying for parking

Team DH. 4 hours each way is nothing. I've done day trips to NYC and back on the train to see a Saturday matinee, and have driven to NYC for the weekend many times.

It’s so typical. That’s not even close to something I’d call a road trip.

Due to life, we won’t be able to take a “traditional” vacation this summer. My husband promised our kids we’d do “something”, and he’s been cooking up a plan. He proposed a three-night trip to NYC and the kids are ecstatic. We will drive. Maps says it’ll take just over 4 hours each way, just over 400 miles each way. For three nights. Flying is out of the question, he priced it and in no world would it be worth it.

To me, this sounds insane, from a logical standpoint. That’s a lot of wear on the car and for what? DH says people do it all the time, and he has friends who travel more and farther for travel sports, which we don’t do.

Is this typical? Or is this insane?
