Ask yourself this: What does UNC have that UVA doesn't?

Conservatives!

(Btw I am not OP)

I believe the acceptance rate for our-of-state is 8% not 18%. Also, think about how many of those are recruited athletes. Mark on Your College Bound Kid podcast says it is the hardest public school to get into from out of state. I would apply but just make sure your kid knows their chances.

+1 this is the answer.
My kids NOVA school has never had an acceptance in its 12 years of existance. My DD LOVED it, but saw how much of a long shot it was an dsettled on ED to UVA.

Not a fool's errand to apply as long as you have the stats, and understand that bc 85% of acceptances are to NC residents, your chances are tiny regardless of stats. Don't fall for the dream school thing, apply to other places with similar qualities, and go for it

UVA has plenty of conservatives (I actually know of a few ) and UNC/Chapel Hill is pretty left-leaning (the school and the town).

It can’t hurt to apply but you already know the chances are very low. My DS loves it too (DH is an alumn so he’s grown up going to games regularly and loves the campus) and will apply. But he knows it will take a real stroke of luck to get admitted. We see it like the lottery, you can’t win if you don’t play.

Admission very unlikely. Nonetheless, I did a very deep dive on this last year because I was so attracted to UNC for some unknown reason. This is why I can confidently say that UVA is better in every respect. Now, between VT and NCSU, the latter is superior in almost every way.

From this area yes, fools errand. I mean have your son apply to a bunch of other schools he’d be happy with and then shoot for the stars. But if that’s the only school for him, he’ll likely be disappointed.

Look at naviance for your school. We are in a well-regarded fcps public school and yet zero UNC Chapel Hill admission success from applicants from our school for the past 3 years.
