I can’t think of why they’d turn you down unless the new center was incredibly overcrowded or something.

Still wouldn't. You live there, you can go there. Period.

This. Th default would be switching. Sometimes they will let you finish the year at the first school.

I think that if it's a terminal year, you can also stay for the whole year

Do you want to go to your new school center, or stay in your old?

Officially, you're required to go where you currently live. You ALWAYS have an option to go to the local school, or center for which you live, regardless of the time of year or capacity/enrollment. Unofficially, if you want to stay (and provide Transportation) to your existing school for the remainder of the year, most schools/principals will work to accommodate you, depending on the over-enrollment capacity. Even more unofficially, I've seen parents just neglect to inform the school of a move, but that gets dicey if the administration cares to start looking into things after your child changes their dismissal method and talks about how they moved in class...

Benefit-wise, you're in the AAP program regardless of where you live in FFX county, so you can game the system, buying a house in a lesser neighborhood that's districted to the center you want, independent of the base schools. This can be a huge cost savings in some areas.

If you are still in Fairfax, I would think you want to keep you child in the original school until summer to minimize disruption.
