i honestly wish we hadn’t visited so many beautiful schools with bright and open dorms and a student population that lives outside. We might think VT was a beautiful campus also.

Which ones did you visit that blew VT away? My DC is a junior so just getting started, but very aware that you need to dig a bit to get the real scoop on housing.

My kid is in an LLC at Tech. It’s still a traditional dorm experience, they just all like science/math. The dorms are not very nice, but at least her LLC is one with air conditioning. That was extremely helpful in August/Sept/early Oct. She’s quite pleased to be moving off campus next year. There are plenty of apartment buildings and they are much nicer than dorms. They did have to secure their own apartment, but the school has an office that helps with that and it held an info session. She and her friends enjoyed touring some apartment buildings and chose one. Many kids will choose in November of their freshman year, so it feels fast, but there are still openings now, so you don’t have to choose early, but most do.

A car won't do you good because students don't qualify for an on-campus parking permit. You take the bus or ride a hoverboard or scooter in the bike lane. During peak times, busses are full so sometimes you wait for the next bus or the bus after. There are a few, expensive options in walking distance, but most require bus or bike.

Blacksburg has seen a lot of new and remodeled student housing come online during the past few years. So much so that the local real-estate mogul (Jeanne Stosser) objected to the university's plan to convert their current dilapidated Greek row into a new 5,000 "Student Life Village" at some point in the future. Source. Now mind you, this is just in the Master plan. The current off-campus housing situation does not reflect this yet.

What is the housing like off campus after freshman year? Do you have to secure housing in the fall for the following year? How easy is it to walk to class from off campus housing? Do you need a car?

You may already know this but housing isn’t much available past the first year. If you want your kid to stay on campus, then an LLC that’s two years is the way to do it.

18:48 is correct. I'll add, my daughter had thought she wanted to live in an LLC, but decided she wanted the traditional dorm experience where everyone has different majors and interests, so that's what she did instead. Met some of her best friends freshman year in the dorm.

When they hear back from LLC they are given a short time frame to accept. Choosing for non LLC dorms will be during the summer, so if not doing an LLC they will choose then based on when they paid their housing deposit. All LLCs are chosen before that time. The later their time, the less they have to chose from. Also definitely more to chose from if going random roomate.

DC applied for 3 living learning communities and is still waiting on a decision. After Hokie Focus this weekend and visiting the dorms, he now wants to not do an LLC and just pick 3 other dorms. Questions:
- If he doesn't do anything now, will he get a decision on the 3 LLCs and also get assigned a random dorm? i.e. Could he end up with 4 choices to pick from?
- Is it possible for him to change his choices now?
