Idk, I have the opposite problem with my parents (they say goodbye and never leave). Yours may be preferable.

He’s probably having old people body “issues” like gas, needing *his* bathroom at home, stomach pains, needs to burp, etc.

My dad does this. If nobody comes outside he'll come back in. but he has to fart. So he goes outside and walks around the block ripping loud farts. I'm sure neighbors think a truck is driving by or something. He does this at relatives' homes, restaurants, anywhere.

My dad does this. I have no idea what this is but it’s got to be medical/pyschological in his case. I think he just reaches a point where he has to go home NOW. He has a sleep disorder so maybe he gets overly tired or needs to get home at a certain time to accommodate his sleep schedule, or he might just get overwhelmed/tired by the social interaction and has reached his limit. But no one really knows because dad will never discuss his personal feelings or needs with anyone so it’s up to us to guess 😂

Jesus, this is not a problem to have and MIL can fight her own fights if she's nuts enough to care about this too.

He has gas after the meal and needs to go outside to clear the 'problem'. Seriously, though, he's probably just trying to move people along. Perhaps he feels MIL takes too long to gather her things and leave.

They've been married presumably longer than you've been alive. Let MIL deal with something like this if it bothers her. She's a grown woman with a mouth, right?

So he drove home without his wife, or just went outside? I would assume he gets overwhelmed by the goodbye process. Or feels like it’s his role to ‘get the car ready.” If this is his one issue, I would just accept it.

My bil will get up mid-family get together and just leave. It freaked me out the first time or two, then I just accepted it. He is the nicest person, he just gets to a point where he has had enough.

Maybe he doesn’t like the fuss. I might make a remark to MIL and if I see she’s fine with her DH’s behavior, then I’d figure it’s one of his quirks.

Great guy in so many ways, but when he’s ready to go, he just…goes. I find this extraordinarily rude! Tonight at dinner we’re finishing signing checks, getting bags, getting kids ready to go etc and he just starts walking away. Left at least 2-3 minutes before everyone else. What is this??
