Juniors responding took the paper PSAT sophomore year and then digital PSAT. Hard to compare the two, because the tests are very different.

1190 PSAT 10th
1300 PSAT 11th fall
1410 SAT 11th spring

Hoping to end up at SAT 1520+

Kid will take the SAT for the second time in May.

Go by percentiles.
1250 is 93-95th%ile
Meaning he can expect with minimal prep to be 1400-1450 sat. Aim for schools that have this as the average. That will set him up to be an avg kid so he can succeed there. Look at pre-test optional common data sets to find out the true SAT tange at schools

Our son got an 1150 on the PSAT in 10th grade. Met with a tutor who encouraged him to take a practice ACT. Without prep on that, he got a 31. Tutor recommended focusing on the ACTs. After some one-on-one prep, he ended up with a 33. I think that's somewhere between a 1450-1480 SAT equivalent. The tutor's analysis and support really helped him!

That’s a pretty good score bc the psat 10 is out of 1500.

I know! I paid this company-local a bunch of money and the 2-3 lessons they did for SAT sucked..im not going to out them but its my bad for wanting to farm things out--independent study on Khan or wyzant so much better...now im stuck with them having a bunch of my money.

If he devotes himself to this, he can break 1500. My DS did and he started out at about 1050 as I recall. Must do the work though.

Mine went from an 11-something to a 13-something on PSATS and then a SAT the 1400s.

DS got an 1170 (or something like that) in 10th grade, a 1240 in 11th with no prep, and a 1460 on the SAT (one and done) after about 10 hours of prep with a private tutor. Prep was costly but absolutely worth it IMO.

DD, like your child, has a 1250 on the PSAT in 10th grade and I'm expecting her to get over 1500 on the SAT/35 on the ACT after some prep this summer. Like your DC, she has straight As and aspirations to attend a highly selective college.

OP is he in 10th now?

He should spend some time this summer prepping and take sat in Aug. He can bring it up to 1400s - just has to put in the work. It’s not at all hopeless.
