Italian? Try Gabriel's. I haven't been the new location since they moved, but it was always a solid choice for upscale Italian. Il Gattopardo is charming but but even more of a splurge. And if you want more casual and less pricy, Trattoria Trecolori is a very good option.

I'd avoid Carmine's (touristy and not great food), Serafina (a chain that's just okay), and Trattoria Dell'Arte (loud, crowded, and they rush you).

In general, I'd also skip the Eataly restaurants. They aren't terrible, but there are many, many better options in Manhattan for wonderful Italian food.

Chinatown is fun. Dimsum at Golden Unicorn if you're adventurous with fewer dietary restrictions or maybe Dimsum Go Go if you want something where ingredients are better labeled and in English.

Chinatown ice cream factory is always fun too-lots of unusual flavors, but there are lots of new dessert places that have popped up.

When are you going? Reservations are hard to get. You need to stalk Resy. Make them as soon as the day opens. Some do it 30 days out, some 7 days..

these are in soho/village/west village which are great areas to walk around and shop so I imagine a teen would like

Reviving this. Desperately need some restaurant options that a teen girl would love. We are open to anything but especially want some good Italian. Staying at the Essex house but willing to walk or go out in different areas.

NYC is a great food city so you'll get more responses if you specify what they like. Off the top of my head:

Ramen (so many good options)
A classic NY slice (I like John's of Bleecker St)
Bagels or bialys (many good options, so look up by neighborhood)
Italian! Again so many good options. I miss the small East Village Italian restaurants
My teenage niece liked the chikalicious 3-course dessert menu, don't know if they have it any more

Balthazar, Patsy's after Broadway show, and dim sum at Ping's are on the agenda. Anywhere else not to miss??
