Two things:

1.) We live in a different state, and I swear, we do NOT have the inflated GPAs I read about here. Yes, you can get over a 4.0 with APs, but it's not like every kid has them. Our district doesn't have any test retakes, late work acceptance, etc.

2.) Sometimes I think people lie. IRL, I've heard people say, "They're a straight A student! They only got Bs in math." That's great ... but it's not straight As.

DC#1 straight As since MS, in a competitive magnet, so wgpa was 4.92.

DC#2 several Bs, not in any magnet, but has several AP level classes, so wgpa is currently over 4.0, unwgpa 3.8 or something.

DP. I think of GPA as unweighted. Weighted GPA is really GPA + rigor.

Kids magnet rigor and also had high test scores, national/international awards and great ECs.

No they don't. Sure, some systems are more inflated than others, but, even in those systems, rigorous classes mean that not everyone gets an A.

My oldest is a HS sophomore so I am just dipping my toes into college admissions. I went to college in the 2000s, was at a competitive public Hs, so I have some preview of how to develop a strong application that tells a good narrative beyond good test scores and gpa. I know it has also gotten more competitive and arbitrary seeming. But the main point of confusion for me is it seems like everyone has a 4.0 these days. I know there is grade inflation - but seriously, not a single A- in 4 years of school? Where we are, a 4.0 average would put you in the top 1-2% of the class. Am I just seeing scores of other 1-2%ers? Or do other schools grade differently?
