+1. There's 3000 kids at a school and three of the varsity starters mysteriously transfer from other public high schools. Coaches should have to select their teams from the kids in boundary for that school.

It's a county problem, 100%. It's so easy to transfer between public schools now and it takes away roster spots from kids who actually live in the boundary.

Transferring for basketball and then either not making the team or being the 11th guy not getting any minutes would be ironic

Depends how good he is. The best schools are the private catholic schools, but those schools recruit for varsity. If he isn’t being recruited, doubt it is really worth moving just for his basketball. Only you would know if he is good enough to warrant the transaction costs and taxes of selling your home and moving to a different pyramid.

What grade is he in now?

We know people who left an FCPS school for a catholic school because the kid was recruited by the coach and was likely to play D1. It seems to be working out great for them. I can't imagine transferring from one public school to another just to say you played on a better high school basketball team.
