It’s not that any specific ones are so great, though they are generally pretty enjoyable, it’s that it gives the kid a chance to see the school again when the option is real and the kid is older/closer to college age. It’s a good reality check that the college is what he thought.

Parents definitely don’t need to go, but many/most do. Totally up to you and your kid to determine what’s best. If you are sending your kid and it requires an overnight, make sure you find a hotel that will let an 18 year old check in; some require the person checking in to be 21.

We attended The Rally at Notre Dame last weekend. It was a great experience, and my DC is thrilled to attend this fall.

Usually, the parents come to these events (at least they did for all the ones that I attended). In many cases, the parents are the ones driving/accompanying the kids to the schools so it makes sense that they would be at the events. Plus, many events have a special programs for parents. But I get it - it is pain to take off work and spend extra $.

W&M DFAS is definitely worth going to!


What stood out to you about W&M DFAS? We are currently registered for it.


I feel like it gives a really great look into what W&M is like and student life. There's a massive club fair and many student group performances. Multiple mock lectures. And opportunities to meet other potential students - I know a lot of people met their roommate at it.

Cost was significantly less at the all the non-Virginia schools on the list due to merit scholarships - and at least for us, money matters. Even outside of cost, I think many of those schools have great things to offer.

We had a blast at Michigan's! They brought in the marching band, answered lots of questions, showed a lived-in dorm room and offered lunch in a good cafeteria. DD was already 99% committed but left so excited and proud to go to Michigan.
