Of course because they make more money that way because the USD is stronger. You are the one losing money by not paying in local currency.

I’m Canadian. It’s fine. Euros are fine too. Canada is very multicultural, especially in the big cities and everyone will appreciate your tip!


But far more inconvenient for them to have to change. Tipping in local currency always preferred.


Th US dollar is currently 1.35 CAD so if you just pretend they are equal while tipping (say, leave US$5 on a CA$25 bill), there will be no inconvenience!

I was there for 5 days in February and took my leftover Canadian dollars from a previous trip and only ended up needing about $10 for tips (valet, etc.).

We do both. Pay credit card when we can but also go to an ATM to carry Canadian $.

I think it's always good to have a little cash. We got some at the border crossing. Some places in Toronto, like some places in St. Lawrence Market took US dollars.
