Hi, op. I’ve also gotten back into running this year, and after kids (SPD, pelvic floor issues, mostly resolved) I prefer the stretchy light compression shorts from 5-8inches. I like the oiselle pocket jogger (easy on, not super tight), run rabbit 7 inch, senita baseline shorts 7 in. Nikes short in this style is pretty tight/compressive. Oiselle Roga is great for a looser short. Good luck!

As someone who runs before sunrise 3-5 days a week, you don’t need reflective stripes in shorts. They are small and will not save you. If you are running at dawn or dusk you need to be seen, but also see.
Headlamps are for your ability to see - people, deer, fallen branches, uneven sidewalks.
A reflective sash / vest lets people with headlamps or cars/bikes with headlights see you. A light-up vest that is also reflective is even better. It doesn’t have to be Noxgear, there are cheaper ones on Amazon.

Thanks, OP, for posting this question. I would love suggestions as well. Can I add to your thread to ask if running in shorts is better than running in leggings, and which brands/styles? I am the poster that posted about the 12 mile run. I appreciated the chaffing solution comments, but I also want to buy new running clothes before the race.

The loose pocket on basketball shorts can’t hold a phone when you run. Keys, and anything else will fly out.

I have thick thighs and I wear Oiselle Long Roga, Lululemon Fast and Free (that I buy used and have hemmed to just above the knee), and Sweaty Better Power / Higher Power shorts in 7”.
Oiselle Roga are my all around workhorse shorts for running miles & running errands. No pockets strong enough for a phone.
Lulu tights - best waistband pockets for gels / blocks, side pockets are huge for phone, ear buds, headlamp when I start before sunrise, etc.
SB - also great pockets for a phone. Less small pockets. I wear these for 80% of my runs June - September.

I like these but wish they were a little higher waisted. My favorites are swift speeds but they don't sell them anymore, I've bought a few pairs from eBay . Look for ones labeled as basketball shorts. They usually have a 12" inseam and pockets.

I really hate running in shorts because no matter what, they ride up between my legs and stick as my legs pass each other. Awkward and uncomfortable.
Instead, I try to wear the lightest weight crop pants I can find. My current favorite are the Athleta Rainier unbrushed. They have a drawstring (must have for me), a nice cell pocket at your lower back, zip pockets for keys/money/dog bags in the upper legs, and mesh along the legs.
