I buy NWT tissue paper from thrift stores for packaging. Also use tissue paper from patterns- I have/had a huge collection of jumbled vintage or newer patterns (no, not reselling and not sewing).

Pouches made from recycled fabric.

If the item is already soft and won't get damaged, you don't need any padding.

I prefer something recyclable without having to rip a sticker or label off of it, preferably made of cardboard or brown paper.

A memorable unboxing experience makes me wonder how much more I paid for fancy paper that I'm going to toss anyway.

I prefer paper/cardboard, anything I can put in the recycling bin.

Second choice, plastic bags that break down quickly into a small ball.

Last choice, anything involving foam.

Penzey's Spices used to put some loose spices in with gift boxes or jar orders. Sliced star anise is very pretty. So I immediately thought of dried flowers and spices in the box.

Paperfolding (like pop-up greeting cards) can have a wow factor without being an expensive material. However the price per each unit might still be costly for a custom design.

Do you expect your customers to compost? Or you just want something that won't last forever in a landfill?

Minimize the packing and make it compostable (made from recycled paper if possible)
