It sounds like the child has the ideas and would do the legwork but needs help finding an organization to partner with

See if an elementary school teacher needs help copying, laminating, and cutting out materials.

Have her talk to your local librarian to ask for ideas! There are a lot of options there.

Playtime Project just featured a kid on their facebook page whose bar mitzvah project was collecting books and housewarming items for families leaving homeless shelters. Maybe they could use some more.

What is the benefit of “child-led”? At 12 they shouldn’t be leading service projects they should be learning from experienced community organizations if they actually want to make a difference in the world.

I know a kid who put together a program where anyone who came to the food pantry at her church with a kid below school age took home a book. They collected gently used picture books, and also held bake sales to raise money to buy books.

My daughter needs to do a community service project. She had a great idea she was pursuing that also relates to her interest in reading, but the organization she tried to partner with does not offer locations in DC, nor are the hours workable (not open on weekends). If anyone is aware of literacy-oriented organizations in DC that may be more flexible, please let me know!
