My DH husband took our au pair to Paris with him last fall, they both said it was wonderful. He had our 7-year-old boy with him, got to show him the city.

Travel outside the US is limited to 30 days for the J1 visa.

If she is from Europe or similar she could just come in on a tourist visa. Who is going to know or care if she does a bit of work while there?

Thanks for the replies. I will also look into a regular nanny who can travel with me. A UK based nanny service is an interesting idea.

I would not trust an au pair with my newborn in a foreign country...but you do you.

Going abroad for 2 months for work with a four month old is a little crazy to me op. Are you going to be coming right off maternity leave? You are still recovering and few vaccines have been administered to the baby and baby sleep isn’t usually sorted until 6 months. Your child will only be this needy once in their life I’m not sure what this project is but that is alot to put you both through.. even with my third kid I would not have attempted that.

Regardless you need a professional nanny most au pairs are not even infant certified.

I can't imagine leaving a 4 month old with someone I didn't get to interview in person. A school age kid who could report if something was off? Sure. Or if you WFH, and can check in often? Maybe. But I'd do everything I could, like finding a job that didn't involve this travel, before I'd take that risk.

I think the au pair program is meant to give the au pairs a cultural experience in america, not bring them back over to europe for 2 months.

We took our au pair overseas w/ us for a week and it was a pain. We had to FedEx something to the agency, they notarized some form and sent it back. There were definitely limits on how long we could have her out of the country. I can’t remember if they were due to the type of aunpair visa she had or due to her country of origin. I will say, I’d get to know the au pair bf if leave a newborn w/ her. Our aunpair turned out to be awful and would have been dangerous w/ a newborn. She admitted to some pretty serious mental health issues as well as falsifying her childcare experience. I would really consider getting a nanny instead and just giving her extra pay for the trip. That’s what we had always done and it had always worked well. We just thought an au pair would be easier ainve the kids were older. We were wrong!

Yeah, this is totally a visa question for the agency. I suspect it would not be legal, but you should definitely check with the agency.
