I love Cavs and recommend Havanese for this personality. I don’t love the way they look, but they are good dogs.

Nothing “poo.” Ugh

Why are 98 percent of the responses recommending a Cav or some kind of Cav mix when the OP stated that she wanted a breed that was not a Cavalier?

Boston Terrier. Yes, they have their moments of insanity, but 99% of the time, they want to be with you or on your lap.

I agree! You cannot beat them, they are the most loving little dogs around

What are you talking about? I don't have one of these but can't understand what you're talking about. I'm a 70+ lb dog person, but the Cavvies I've met are lovely and probably my favorites of the small dogs and least annoying. What do they do with their tails?

I have a 14 year old Havanese. He is 12 pounds, non shedding. He has a wonderful sweet temperament.

We have a 14 year old cavapoo and he has the cavalier temperament; he's avoided the worst of the health issues so far, although he does have a partially collapsed trachea that doesn't seem to both him. However, I didn't know about the cavalier health issues when we bought him, and I might not have if I'd known.

Since cavaliers are bred to be lap dogs, it's hard to find other dogs with exactly that temperament. I have a friend who has had Shih Tzu's, and they are similarly bred for that, but they have their own health problems.

People often claim doodles are crazy, but we have two that are both very sweet. If you don't want to take a chance on doodles, miniature poodles are great dogs. Very smart, but also very affectionate. I have a friend who has a Bichon frise, and it's very cute and sweet.

If you like spaniels, maybe a Boykin spaniel? They're neat dogs, generally smart and active, generally good family pets. They are larger than a Cavalier, but not really big dogs. Since they are not as popular as Cockers or Springers it is easier to avoid some of the puppy mill / backyard breeder operations. They are also incredibly cute.

Get a cab mix, they are far healthier. Ours is a half cavalier, quarter poodle, quarter cocker spaniel. Easier to find cavalier- cockers, or cavapoos.

Mini bernadoodle? We had cavs before and I think these are just as good from a companion standpoint. Also chose them as both our cavs had horrible health issues. Sorry for the loss of your dog

We just got a cavapoo puppy and love him — he is beyond cute and incredibly social. I don’t have any personal experience with cavalier King Charles spaniels, but cavapoos are a cross between them and poodles. Ours must have a lot of poodle DNA because he doesn’t shed at all.

We absolutely love the temperament and personality of CKCS, but their health problems make me hesitant to get another one. We were relatively lucky with our last dog though I feel she could have lived longer being a small breed.

How old was your cavalier? We’re on our second, our first died when she was 7. Way too young. But they are just the best ever, so good with kids. We got another. You should too. Our breeder for our 2nd was Brothers Cavaliers in PA. She only breeds rubies and black and tans. She’s very knowledgeable about the breed and their heath issues. People also love Havanese

Any recommendations for a breed with a similar temperament but maybe a little better health record? Any recs for breeders within driving distance? I want to take time and do some research on the breeds and breeders. Looking for a similar size dog… small but not miniature. Thanks.
