Kids that would have gone to Georgetown or Williams or an Ivy don’t want to spend $85-99k/year so more and more are going in-state instead. Very few NoVA residents will qualify for financial aid anywhere since HHI are some of the highest in the nation and COL isn’t a factor in aid.

UVA is now #24 and WM provides the size and education of those $85k Slacs.

Got it?

It’s this more than anything else ^^

And this is across the board at any state school. The price tag matters so now all the in state kids are competing with kids from private schools - which generally offer a much better education (there is a reason multiple expensive privates exist and prosper in DC). Better writers, more money and prep for everything from SATs to the extracurriculars. The middle of the pack at public universities will disappear - it will be be the poor kids and URMs and the top tier private kids with killer applications. The rest will be admitted based on oure luck.

College admissions has changed across the board since we applied. In many many ways. Pay attention. It isn't just UVA.

My niece got accepted a couple weeks ago. She had ok stats but nothing special. She goes to a run of the mill public high school in Fairfax county.

I think maybe the reason she got accepted is that she has had a job since she was in 9th grade? That's the only thing I can think that would differentiate her....

Agree with this. I went to Cornell waaay back in the day and my parents were able to pay the tuition. But it’s stupid-expensive now and I don’t even see it as an option for my kids. I’m hoping they’ll get into one of the VA schools, but we’ll see how that plays out when the time comes.

Nowadays, only Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Princeton, and Yale are worth the ridiculous fees they charge.

It's a small school relative to the size of the state and they have a lower percentage of seats reserved for in state students than most peer schools

The privileged and wealthy are no longer hogging all the pie. It's great that new initiatives support women, POCs, URMs, and kids in poverty so that they too can have a chance to change their future trajectory through a college education.

And ironically UVa CS and Engineering programs are quite mediocre, at best

Move to a different part of the state where a 1400 SAT will get you an admit. Also, apply ED. ED has changed the game at UVA because many of the most qualified NOVA kids used to apply EA and use UVA as a backup. But with one-third of spots going to ED and overall apps up, seats now go quickly, especially in CS and engineering, and many highly-qualified NOVA kids now make UVA their first choice.

Not sure what you are looking for in terms of an answer. Admission to UVA, like all of the top-30 schools has become hyper-competitive. Common app and test optional has driven the number of applications way up. This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Decent grades are definitely not enough anymore.

I graduated in 1992 but now, the chances for DC getting in are zero!! He has decent grades but UVa just seems like a dream at this point.
