30 years ago, I had 600 kids in my entire high school, in an 1500 kid district where everybody knew everyone else, and you couldn’t sit on the toilet seats because they had craters burned into them from putting out cigarettes, and I only used the bathroom during the semesters I had PE. I don’t love the size of high schools in fcps, but that’s not the problem here.

There are smaller schools. They are called Sidwell Friends and Potomac, not Oakton and West Potomac. That ship has sailed.

What about having two additional security guards, whose only job is to randomly check bathrooms. A male and a female. They randomly check the bathrooms throughout the day. If caught, make the punishment severe. Have them wear some kind of audio recording as a check on guards themselves.
Dream on. If schools could impose punishments, we wouldn't be having this problem in the first place.

So…2 people at $40,000 a year at 100 MS and HS schools. That would cost 8 Million dollars a year.
There are about 50 MS and HS combined, not 100, in FCPS.

Bathrooms were an issue when I was in school. Kids smoked, there were drugs, and they were gross. I am not certain how you fix the issue, short of hiring monitors who stand outside the bathrooms, which would be expensive given the number of bathrooms. You are looking at how many full time jobs to monitor bathrooms.

I find it highly disturbing that we normalize that it’s ok for bathrooms at many FCPS MS and HS to be unsafe. Like most parents, we advise children to avoid them due to drugs/vaping/violence/rape/etc.
We are in big trouble as a community by telling our children to avoid a primal necessity, like going to bathroom, because it is dangerous.
Why has no PTA or parent group pushed this on FCPS? Kids should not avoid drinking water and going to the bathroom because of safety concerns. What solutions are there for FCPS to monitor and supervise our children better at school so they are safe?
Has anyone else reflected on the normalization and desensitization of this safety issue that’s unresolved and unfair to our children? Have any schools addressed this?
