I was just talking to my new PCP about this last week. She opened her concierge practice a few years ago. She says her sister, who has an MBA and helps her run the practice, has been key. One of my specialists has his wife as the office manager -- she does pretty much everything he doesn't.

But you can hire a practice manager who knows this stuff -- how to find space, how to keep the lights on, how to hire, etc.

Med Chi in Maryland would help with a doctor setting up a practice. Maybe other states have similar?

Very few from dental school to own practice. It’s usually dental school to established practice and then, if you want/need to, start own practice.

A brand new dentist wouldn’t have a patient base built up.

I know this is prob a really stupid question. But I have no business or health background. I was talking about this with my kid, who is interested in this path. Do they teach this in dental school? (I assume not). If they don't, how do people figure out how to do this????

I see lots of corp dental practices now, many masquerading at family dentists (guessing they bought them out?). So do many dentists even start their own practices these days?

Not a dentist, but a Physician ( MD).
No, no one in med school or Residency teaches you how to set up your own practice. You have to learn these things on your own. It is easier now, with so much information online.

I am not a dentist but dated one. In his experience, this was learned after dental school from dentists he worked for. He later started a practice.
