It's used to indicate self-harm or suicide. Places like TikTok ban certain words and that's one of them. Same when videos discuss pew-pews. They aren't being cute, but the word "gun" can get your video removed. When you get paid per view, having your video removed sets you back.

I don't like it either but people started using it because certain websites block the word "suicide"

2. Words that have recently become used in new ways and are now over-used, and that I associate with social media addicts, like "pivot", "curate", and "gifted"
