Less is more. You'll have to find storage every summer and they'll not even open mist of the stuff even once, lose a lot and overuse some.

My advice (from moving a boy into college 2 1/2 years ago) is not to go crazy on the shopping ahead of time. Wait to get into the dorm and see what's needed, and what room there is for extras.

My son went to college a six hour car drive, and my DH and I stayed in a hotel for a couple of nights after move-in day, which helped for running around to pick up things (and DS didn't have a car his freshman year). We brought bedsheets, blanket, pillow, his clothes, shoes, a couple bath towels, etc. But once we got there and got an idea of the size and shape of the room, we went out for some extra storage bins, a curtain and rod for the room, some cleaning supplies, food, those removable hooks, things like that.

I did do the shoe storage thing over the door, filled with misc. school supplies, batteries, extra phone chargers for him and his roommate to use, which I really thought my son would find horribly cringey. But turned out he appreciated it.

And leave a note for him on his pillow when you leave.

It's March and he a guy, he needs nothing that he doesn't already have.

Basics. DS wanted nothing matchy or decor. Are you driving or flying? Regardless, I’d just order online for pickup at Target. The Woozoo fan from Costco is well worth it if they don’t have air conditioning. One set of sheets is all DS uses (washes and puts right back on the bed). A cool door stopper was also well received.

I would start by looking at what the school he is attending provides for a list, and if you know their residental hall even better - some had dorm specific things that were provided or needed.

Our student had very simple needs - clothing, bedding, computer/electronics, shower/toiletries, laundry, cleaning supplies.
